"Apparuerunt in terra nostra flores"

I recently took my camera and headed to the South Natick/Wellesley/Dover area to try and get some shots to submit for a photo contest I'm considering entering.  As I was driving down Rt. 16 and along the Charles River, I noticed this statue perched on the rock.  I've seen it numerous times over the years, but never had a chance to stop and take a look at it.  From across the river, you can't really see any houses, so of course my curiosity of who might have placed it there got the best of me.  I grabbed a few shots of it and after a little bit of editing, I decided to search online to see if there was a story behind it, and of course the web didn't fail me.

There are several myths surrounding the statue, when it was placed there and why.  Some think that it was placed there as a reminder for a child who drowned in the river in 1952.  Another story is that it was placed there as a reminder of a mistress that Daniel Sargent, who apparently had the statue commissioned, once had in Paris.

Whatever the reason, it's a stunning vision as you drive around the bend on Route 16 in South Natick.
